Finished Second Advert

This is our finished second advert. We did originally plan to add another section being the 'noodle adicts' groups, however after we filmed this we decided against using it. Our advert was already 26 seconds in length and we couldnt of got rid of any more to fit that bit in, and also we feel it might of confused the audiecne as it wasnt one hundred percent clear. We feel this is short and to the point, and with the extra bit it would of been too much.

Creativity :)

This is my attempt at doing a creativity exercise at making an album cover out of random words and a random image. I explored options within photoshop to create a presentable peice, and use creativity within in the font i chose. I used a black and white themed font to combine with my image.

Creativity Exercise

Today's lesson with Mr Ford, we were asked to create a cd cover using photoshop. The intructions were:

1. Generate a name for your band by using WikiPedia's random page selector tool, and using the first article title on whichever page pops up. No matter how weird or lame that band name sounds.

2. Generate an album title by cutting and pasting the last four words of the final quote on whichever page appears when you click on the quotationspage's random quote selector tool. No matter what those four words turn out to be.

3. Finally, visit Flickr's Most Interesting page -- a random selection of some of the interesting things discovered on Flickr within the last 7 days -- and download the third picture on that page. (Even better: Click on this link to get a Flickr photo that's licensed under Creative Commons.) Again -- no cheating! You must use the photo, no matter how you feel about it.

4. Using Photoshop (or whatever method you prefer), put all of these elements together and create your very own CD cover.

Mine turned out like this:

Throughout the lesson I developed many skills using photoshop. I was also able to experiment with all the differernt tools which exercised my creative mind.

My band were called 'Plot' and the Album name was called 'Nothing behind the Geometry'.

On the whole, I found this exercise fun as it was so random and we didn't have to think of a name.

Postmodern Essay

Postmodern Media Essay

This is my essay on postmodernism film. I have talked about two media texts we have been studying, 'Pulp Fiction' & 'Fight Flub'.

Saturday 13 February 2010

Cassablanca

Clip One
The mise -en scene is that of an office, we are able to tell this by the desk. Strassers costume reflects his status as he is wearing a tailored dark uniform which distungishes from others. There is lots of close up shots focusing on Struasser and Lalzo, and very little shots of Isla, showing she is not a dominant role. Between Strusser and Lazlo there is an eyeline match showing there is not one character who has greater dominance than the other. There is also no music, so that the audience can focus on the dialouge.

The main sterotype for Strausser is that he is the 'evil' pwerful one. This fits into Levis Straus theory that all media text has a good vs. evil, and Strausser being the evil one, and Lazlo being the good one.

Clip Two
The mood in Paris at the begining of the scene is meant to portray romance. We see iconic Paris momuments, such as the Eiffel tower which show us the location. The car scene where Rick has his arm round Isla, suggests he is romantic and caring, and also fits the steriotype of Gilmores 'man the protector', and shows Isla as needy. The diagetic music that plays also adds to the romance as it is "as time goes by", this also connotates forshadowing events.

In the apartment it still looks romantic and cosy as the mise-en scene shows a piano and flowers.

Now we are going to re-film the last part of the first advert and then we have 2 full days in which to edit this.

I have also done a fair amount of my evaluation so i feel that we are coming on okay, and should not be stressed.

Finished TV sponership

This is our finished Tv sponership advert. It is shorter in length than a real advert as it would be shown just before the start of a progamme they are sponersing. ours being Britania High a music drama for teenagers.

Adding Image To End Of Adverts

we added an image to the end of our adverts to help promote the product. We took a picture of our product on a digital camera, lasoosed around the image to make the background black. We saved it to a memory stick and then uploaded the image. When this is shown the voice over slogan is played at the same time.

Postmodern

Postmodern sensibility, is where something is bad, but it's so bad that it's good.
Such as 'The Beastie Boys'. When they arrived on the scene, the press hated them but they were highly successful. They have worked with artists such as Led Zepplin to the Beatles.

Collective Identity

In the past two Thoery lessons we have been looking at representation of gender, and the history behind it. We have studided feminism and how it has developed from the Stone Age, through the First and Second World War, to were feminsm stands today.

In World War 1, posters were used to attract men to join the army. The posters played upon emotions such as guilt, pressure and pride. The "Women of Britian Say Go" is targeted at both sexes as it encourages the wifes of men to encourage them to go, and also puts guilt on the males.

The mise-en scene use of text is intresting. The largest word on the page is "Go" and imperitive command. The picture is of two vunrable women, with the arm men in group in view out of the window. It gives the sense of unity the fact they are together. The colour is not partiucllay bright which creates dull moood.

The connatations attached to this poster is that en should be strond and protect thier wifes and children.

filming

The due date is nearing and we really need to get a wriggle on. Also, as the evaluation needs to be 'non boring', eve and I need a discussion on how we are going to do it. I think a video would be quite eye catching.

Collective Identity

Womens rights

This lesson we watched a video on womens rights, Germaine Greer: Big ideas that changed the world: feminism.
Feminism is so dated that we are taken back to the stone age.

Stone age: Men were classed as hunters and women, gatheres. Women were so undervalued that the men had dominence and insisted women were made for child birth.
1700 Ancient Greece: Men thought women were inferier and had lack of strength.
1700 Birth of Revolutionary Feminism, Mary Wollstonecraft: 'A vindictation of the rights of women': Mary Wollstonecraft argued that there is nothing natural about the 'natural order'. She argued because women wanted an education in politics and economics. What Wollstonecraft knew, she taught herself. She wrote a book in action to fight for womens rights. She yearned to free woman and liberate their minds as well as their bodies. "Confined in cages like birds...Vertue is lost in exchange".
She felt that women choosing their partners was the right way. Unfortuately she died giving birth to her second child, and when she died, revolutionary died with her.
Equality Feminism: 1840 Elizabeth Cady Stanton: Elizabeth Cady Stanton was a respected campaigner who fought for womans rights. She thought that woman were treated as degrading as slaves. In 1848 she organised a womans rights campaign. This is when equlity feminism took off, with the help of Mary Wollstonecraft's death. Elizabeth Stanton proudly read "All woman and men are equal". She was also preeching that woman should get to vote.
1903 The womens Social and political union: The suffragettes: The suffragettes is a group of woman that went around campaigning and causing a riot. They cut telegraph wires, smashed windows and burned down buildings. Some woman went to prison, there they went on hunger strike. Some woman died in order of the campaign.
Impact of world war 1 1918: After the world war 1 british woman 30 and over were allowed to vote, this was after years of suffering. Lots of men died in world war one so many woman were needed to work in factories etc.
Employment for women after WW1 1920's-1930's: Woman were tought everything to learn the buisness of work. They became teachers, factory workers, but yet were on a terrible pay.
World War 2: During the world war, many woman went to work for the first time as there were hardly any men to work. This showed huge potential. Their pay was still poor.
Second wave feminism, 1957 Betty Friedan 'The feminine Mystique': After the second world war woman soon went back to their domestic femininity. After a survey for woman was done, Betty Friedan soon learnt that woman were deeply unhappy with their lives being a housewife. She wrote a book and in just mearly 3 years she gained nearly 3 million pounds. her book encouraged woman to break free from theur housewifes shell.
1960 Gregory Pincus 'The pill': At this point in the year there was no contraception so womnan had to undertake so many unwanted pregnancys so therefore Gregory Pincus created the famous 'pill'. It was very popular becuase this is one thing that woman had power over. Motherhood. They were free to persue education and a career. It also libarated men too as they could feed their needs. Also, woman came to realise that the pill came at a price, STI's. Sexually transmitted diseases went sky high as the pill does not protect you from getting an STI.
1960's insparation from the american civil rights movement: Black americans segragated their civil rights to stop racism and woman campaigned agaisnt sexism.
1969 'The female eunuch' Germaine Greer: Germaine Greer argued that woman were degraded. "No matter how many times she paints her lips, she will never be beautiful enough."
1970's Political groups, Miss world beauty pagent: Some women protested against beauty pagents as they argued that woman were treated like goods in shop windows. Men swooned at these beautiful women. People protested as pagents were degrading and this turned peoples views. This year there was equal pay for women and woman set up safe houses for woman dealing with domestic violence. Abortions were a big issue also, 50 woman died each year due to illegal abortions. Some were hospitalised.
1980's capitalism and thatcher: Margaret thatcher was the first and so far the only woman prime minister. She was very respective. Some argued that what she did was right, some argued that it was wrong.
1990's Globalised consumerism and the return of the female eunuch: This year globalisation went into overdrive and 'Female stereotypes has concored the world' according to Germaine Greer. Pornography multiplies daily. parents get money for their children so their child doesn't grow up in poverty. Also, woman still get payed less than men.

Conclusion: This day and age, woman and men are both considared as equal and feminism will still change, but for the better.

Next Week

On wednesday we are going to get down to buiness and do some tweeking to out first advert and to out radio advertisment.

Today i am going to start thinking about out evaluation.

Monday 11 January 2010

The Gaze

-This term was origionally used in film theory in the 1970's to refer to the ways viewers look at people on screen.
-'Male gaze' is the way males look at woman
-Jonanthan Schroeder (1998) "to gaze implies more than to look at ..." basically, when you look at someone on screen, you're more than looking, you are analysing them.

Forms of a gaze:
-Spectators gaze, the intra diegectic gaze, the direct adress, the look of the camera, the gaze of the bystander, the gaze of the audience within a text.

Direction of gaze:
Trevor Millum distinguished between these forms of attention in his study of woman in magazine advertisements.
-Attention directed towards others
-Attention directed towards object
-Attention directed to oneself
-Attention directed to the reader/camera
-Attention directed into the middle

Laura Mulvey
-A failure to account for female spectators
-Looks at the spectator as being hetorsexual male

Categorising facial expressions:

Woman
Chocolate box
Invitational
Super smiler
Romantic or sexual
Marjorie Ferguson (1980)

Men
Carefree
Practical
Seductive
Comic
Catalogue
Trevor Millum (1975)

Stereotypes

Stereotypes is a label and the short hand way to understand something.
-Stereotypes focus on certain characteristics
-Some stereotypes are negative. Eg men say woman are bad drivers... If so then why are womans car insurence cheaper?

How does media use stereotypes?
-They use stereotypes that already exist within cultures
-Is media reinforcing stereotypes eg, in soaps?
-Often the media is criticised for creating stereotypes, but they are usually part of the audiences way of thinking about the world anyway.

Some people argue that stereotypes can be truthful..

-Stereotypes are assumptions about all members of a particular group.
"All woman like to gossip" some woman do, some woman don't. Some men do, some men don't.

Tessa Perkins noted that stereotypes do have some truth that does make it plausable. Some woman may be more comfortable doing it as it is more culturally acceptable.

Butler argues that the boundaries are blurring. Stereotypes are negative.
-Gossip is a bad thing, a waste of time.
-See people in a group, not individually.
-Men would have power over woman by putting them down
-Stereotypes give a 'complete picture'

Stereotypes can be positive:

-Positive represtentation are called Corrective stereotypes or Counter types.
-Society is more aware of positive stereotypes
-Many media texts have attempted to construct new approaches to old stereotypes. Eg buffy the vampire slayer- despite being a young blonde female (typically the victim of a horror), buffy is the hero and rescuer.

What makes a stereotype?
-Appearence (physical appearence)
-Behaviour (Males being interested in football, Woman like to gossip)
-Attitude (Age) (Men don't like long term relationships)

Our task was to choose a well known stereotype..
We chose Barry Newton (newt) from the well know television series 'Hollyoaks'
-He has darkk hair, pale skin, dark makeup. Always assosiated with the colour black or dark colours, he typically has depressing views on the world. Emo's are often percieved as depressed and suicidal.

Representing Gender

How boys and girls are socialised into their gender roles..

Boys Toys:
-Cars
-Robots
-Super heros

Girls Toys:
-Barbies
-Animals
-Bratz
-Kitchens
-Ponys

Basically, girls learn how to become a mum, taking care of their dolls and using a fake kitchen and boys learn how to become more tough and masculine by fighting games etc.

Using magazines, we can see deeper into the interests of men and women.
Woman's magazines are very image concious. It reflects the idea that woman take pride in their appearence. Woman have other woman on the cover for inspiration whereas if we see a man on the cover od a mans magazine we would stereotypically think that they're gay.

Men's magazines are quite superficial as there is nothing aimed at woman . There is more versitility as some mens mags have all sorts of gadgets.

Gender relates to our film as we have a male and femal role.

Starting to think about evaluation..

These are the evaulation equestions we have to evaluate after finishing our practical. We will answer these individully on our own seperate blogs

In the evaluation the following questions must be answered:
1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
E.g. Here you need to analyse at least 9 key shots from your main task and write about: generic conventions you’ve applied or subverted, your use of camera work, lighting, music, mise en scene, intertextuality, shots which show you’ve watched similar media texts. Pick key features from your ancillary tasks and do the same.

2. How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?
E.g. Here you should provide background information to your products detailing what kind of image you hoped to create and your main aims behind creating the campaign. You should mention: research, narrative, use of colour, text, font, images, sound and how they link. Evaluate your pieces by considering what worked well and what you’d change if you could.

3. What have you learned from your audience feedback?
E.g. Initial feedback you received from peers, teachers and social networking sites and what you did about it

4. How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?
List all of the equipment you used and how it helped you – what would you have had to do if you didn’t have access to it? Include screengrabs of the programmes you used.

You must answer all of the questions in as much detail as possible.
You should include a variety of different ways to answer your questions as you will be assessed on your presentation e.g. screengrabs, scribd, director’s commentary, JPEG files, slideshare etc
see http://musicvideomattleonowicz.blogspot.com/ for examples of these ways

-Edit our first advert
-Film the beginning of our second advert
-Edit the beginning of our second advert

If we get this done by next week then we will have managed to finish practical work before the deadline and get any other bits that we are unsure of re-filmed or re-editied.
