Collective Identity

To what extent do these adverts conform to or subvert traditional gender roles? To what extent do they conform to or subvert traditional gender roles?
Consider textual details (mise en scene, music, voice over etc) in your analysis.

This advert conforms to the tradtional gender role for boys. The voice over of the advert is a teenage male which reflects the target audience or close to the age range. The diolouge consitics of words such as 'cool' which is more relevent to boys and used more in thier vocabulary. The mise on scene has a green wash throughout which is a sterotypical masculine colour. The mise on scence also has technical gadgets which are targeted at males. The editing is fast paces to add to the advert seeming dramatic. The background music consists of a upbeat rhymthm with wooshing sounds which anchor to the flying cards, and also sounds of beeping sounds which links to the gadgets on screen. This advert would not attract the younger female audience in any way as everything is targeted to the male gender.

As you can clearly see from the very beginning of this advert it has targeted young girls as the background is pink and the backing vocals are 'I love ponies'. We immidiately know that the age range is less than 13 years old as young girls like ponies. The camera angles and editing is fast paced, this i feel is to make the ponies seem more exciting and the voice over is a woman enthusiastically commentating what the horses can do. eg 'And now a fresh apple, WOW'. Clearly this advert is stereotyping young girls as the there wouldn't be any pink colour and there is a woman voice over.

Not Been Able To Edit Yet

Not had a lesson or any free time to upload and have a look at what we have done so far... think it will be tuesday next week when we are given the time to do so.

++++ On a plus note, i think our blog is begining to look really good now, obviously one of the best :)

More Pulp Fiction..

Tatrantino uses referances to other films to add to the postmodern theme. This relies on the contexual understanding of the audience however, as they may not been understood if not watched. This picture shows link between two films because of
Mia's classic 'bobbed' haircut styled after Louise Brooks in Pandora's Box (1928 G.W. Pabst)

Reference to Marilyn Monroe's skirt flying up over a subway grating in The Seven Year Itch (1955 Billy Wilder)

When Butch considers saves Marcellus he takes great consideration in choosing a weapon. If this wasn't aimed to be postmodern the more realistic thing to do would be to grab the nearest thing to him. These weapons all have interlinks with other films:
Hammer — The Toolbox Murders (1978)
Baseball bat—Walking Tall (1973)
Chainsaw — The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)

'Pulp Fiction'

In the past couple of Mr Fords lessons we have been looking at the film 'Pulp Fiction' directed by Quentin Tarantino. 'Pulp Fiction' is basically about four hitmen who link into one another in four tales of violence. The criticism for this film has been that becuase the film makes so many intertextual refrences is so sly and knowing that it doesn't seem 'real' it feels/looks like a construction. The question we got asked was, does this make it more postmodern? I feel it does for example, in the real world, if somone were to have an overdose like Mia Wallace did in the film, shooting an adrenaline injection through the breast plate would not work as the breast plate is too strong to take it so obviously this was done for dramatic effect. Wheras the storylines Tatrantino and Avary used such as rape, this is realistic. I enjoyed the film and enjoyed the structure of it as there were many flashbacks, such as the begining was at the end.

Answer To Music Problem

I have spoken to Mr. Ford, & We cannot use normal use for the resturant scene. We need to get searching on non-copywrited sites for somthing we feel apporopirate for when we begin to edit what we have started to film yet.

First Filming Report

Tongith we did our first lot of filming! It went well and we did lots of different angels and filmed alot of material so that we can see how it looks and pick and choose what looks best..

It took us a while to get started because we had the giggles, but once we got over that we worked well together. We did have one problem and that was the music! We filmed a bit with the music in the background & then realised it wouldnt have the same continuity throughout with stopping and starting so dicided to film in silence and then edit the sound in.

DURRRR!

obviously something would have to go wrong..

well not exactly, but we forgot to get a film for the camera from school. But Sarah Humphrey (the living legend) has a spair one, so guess i will be driving to Lutterworth tomorrow to pick it up. Also Jack & Simon are now helpin with our filming as Ash has work, so will be picking them up too.

Packaging Maybe?

Obviously we have to create our own brand and packaging to go with the product. We are going to use an exisitng container and make our own logo and packaging. I had a go on paint at creating one.. (i'm not the most creative person in the world but did have a go). I used squiggely lines to conote the idea of the 'Doodle'. It is fairly simple, but im guessing we arn't excpected to do somthing amazing and wont be getting marked on this. I will print it out and see how it looks stuck onto a container.

I think Heather might have alredy had a go at one, but there is no harm in us both having a go and deciding which one to use :)

'Doodle Noodle's'

As we are filming tomorrow, I bought a Pot Noodle but customised it to make it our own. I simply used word to create the packaging for 'Doodle Noodles'. It is quite tempting not to eat it!

Where To Be:

Because the people in out advert havn't ever been to the resturant where we are filming i have found a map so they know what street ect .. xxx

Filming

We are planning to start filming on Sunday as Eve mentioned earler in the post. Realistically, we are looking to get the whole of the first advert filmed as the advert is going to be 30 seconds long so it shouldn't be a problem. I will make sure the cast know of our plans. All we really need to do for now is make sure we have all the equipment we need!

Music - First Advert

ignoring the problem i have had a listen to a few exisitng records we have at work.
We need calm, background music so the audience is not nessicerly even aware of which song but adds atmosphere to the scene. I have come up with here is an example..

Music Problem?

obviously for the first advert we need to set the scene of a restuarant and our main focus isnt music however this does need to be considerd. I dont know the situation about usuing copywrite music but surely it shoudlnt be a major issue like other people as the focus isnt on the music and is on the dialect of the people.

This will also be impossible to play non copywrite music as i cannot play anyother music through the speakers at work other than what is the system.

I hope this dosn't cause too much of an issue.. i will email a teacher to check.

Filming Preperations

This lesson I made sure I booked out a camera in advance so we know for sure that we can start filming in our half term as we were unable to film last Sunday. So all we have to do is rememeber to collect it on Friday!
We also need to write out a schedule of days Eve, Sadie, Ash and I are free so let us know please!

Ditching Web Pop Ups

Today we were thinking more about our ancilary tasks. After spending a long time searching the internet for examples of web pop ups, we came to the conclusion that this is the task we do not want to persue. Our reasons for this are all modern computors have anti-virus which block forms of pop ups, and without examples it would be hard to make a sucessful one. We feel web pop ups to advertise products are abit out dated.

At least we can rule this one out and concentrate on the other two.

What Is A Web Pop Up?

Wikipedia Definition

Pop-up ads or pop-ups are a form of online advertising on the World Wide Web intended to attract web traffic or capture email addresses. It works when certain web sites open a new web browser window to display advertisements. The pop-up window containing an advertisement is usually generated by JavaScript, but can be generated by other means as well.

A variation on the pop-up window is the pop-under advertisement, which opens a new browser window hidden under the active window. Pop-unders do not interrupt the user immediately and are not seen until the covering window is closed, making it more difficult to determine which web site opened them.

Thinking About Ancilary Tasks

Although we could not film this Sunday this means we have more time for planning and time to think about our ancilary tasks..

We have the option of two out of the three

- Radio Advertisment
- Web Pop Up
- TV sponsership sequence

We have decided to do abit of research into all three before deciding which ones would be best for us and then researching and developing them two further.

Unable To Film

As you know we did arrange to be filming today, but unfortunatly it had to be cancelled because Sadie was very ill and was unable to come film with us which is a bit of a let down.. However, we will 100% be filming sometime in the week when we are all free (Let me know dates when you are) or at the weekend. We also have half term to crack on and hopefully get alot of material.

Kill Bill - Postmodernism

Media reality is the new reality. We no longer have any sense of the difference between real things, images of them, or real experiences and simulations of them. Represenations are re interpreted and played around with through pastiche and intertexual references. People will deliberately expose the text as constructed to tell the audience that the piece is not real and it never pretends to be real at any point, they don't try and hide the fact the media text is constructed.

An example of this is in media text is Quentin Tarantino's film 'Kill Bill'. Tarantino delibaraty wants the audience to recognise this is not real life, merly a film so he uses techiniques to bring the audince back to realisation of this. Firstly, the mise on scene in shows the audience the set of the film rather than real life; as birds eye view shots seeing theough the ceiling of a house is rarley used.

Also, subtle techniques also reflect postmoderism. There is a childs painting on the wall which is meant to just be a doodle or simple painting, but indicates splattered blood which ties in with what is about to happen. The cereal is called "kaboom" showing the audience a gun exposion may happen. The spraying blood is exagerated and not realistic.

For our advert it would not be suitable to use any postmodern elements, as we want the audience to percieve our product how it is portrayed with no underlying meaning or message. We want the scene to be realistic.

Costume

For our first advert the costume the characters play needs to reflect and link with the mise-en scene. This is why we have decicded for our characters to be well dressed in 'going out' clothng.

I know this is really bad attempt but it was abit of fun aswell !

Script - First Advert

Before we start to film our first advert we have to have a script prepared so our actors know what to say.

Script for Media Heather

Eve and I are undecided on our second scene so we plan to fim both takes and pick which scene is more effective. We start to film on sunday evening so i am pretty excited with how things will turn out.

Avertisment Theory

It is useful to note how directly a depicted person gazes out of the frame. A number of authors have explored this issue in relation to advertising in particular.

In study of women magazine adverts, Trevor Millum distinguished these forms of attention:
attention directed towards other people
attention directed to an object
attention directed to oneself
attention directed to reader/ camera
attention directed into middle distance, as in a state of reverie
direction or object of attention not discernable (cant make it out).

Relationships between those depicted:
reciprocal attention- directed at each other
divergent attention- directed at different things
object-oriented attention- both looking at the same thing
semi-reciprocal attention- attention of one person is on the other, whose attention is elsewhere.

The Seven Kinds..

'Cross Cultural Consumer Characterisation' (4C's)
In 1969 Dr Maslow was studying monkeys. He found that monkeys always made sure they weren't thirsty before looking for shelter and always made sure they found shelter before finding a companion. He then went on to study humans, and to his suprise, humans acted the same was as monkeys, for example humans never went out to find love before feeling secure. What became of this was, Dr Maslows hierachy of needs.
Young and Rubican researched on where people stood in the differernt catogories.
The hierachy of needs accepted that people from different cuntries were influenced by their culural background.
The explorer is driven by a need for discovery. They respond to brands that offer new sensations. They will explore the differernt flavours.
The Aspirer is driven by other people's perception rather than their own opinion. Their core need for life is status so they are drawn to an attractive brand.
The succeeder has self confidence and tends to be very organised. For brands they would often seek the best becuase that is what they feel they deserve. Their core need for life is control.
The reformer is very different in comparison to the explorer as they will not buy things just because they are new. The reformer searches for enlightenment.
The mainstream are the largest group whitin the 4C's. They respond to big established family brands. Their core need for life is security.
The struggler lives for today and strives on visual and physical sensation. They seek escape.
The resigned are mostly the older generation who's values have been built up over time. Their brand choices are driven by a need for safety and for economy so they choose what is familier to them.

I realise that the relevent catogories that link with our advert are the struggler and the explorer. People that will buy our product will buy it in the heat of the moment becuase it's quick and easy to make. They will long to explore the differerent flavours 'Doodle Noodles' create theorefor the rest of the catogories will not be applicable.

This is Eve's results when she did the questionaire on the powerpoint

Todays Lesson

In Todays lesson we are compleating the script together so we can talk and decide together as this is a key element and it should not just be deicded by one person.. Also finishing the story board for our first advert so we are all set to go on Sunday.

Other Peoples Blogs

I have linkd everyone els's blogs in our media class to our blog. I have also done this with some other people in other classes who are in our adverts. I think this is important as we can gain inspiration from other peoples blogs, and hopefully they can do the same from ours.

We also would appricate feedback on ideas and suggestions if any of you nosy people are looking.. !! Please :)

Reminder About Filming!

Just to make it abit more fun ;)

Hope you all can make it, let me know otherwise! Thanks Eve x

Starting To Think About Music

Just thinking about the sort of music we will need for both our adverts.. Although it is a key part because both adverts orientate around speech its not as important to us just yet as perhaps people doing a music video (obiously).

For the first advert i think there needs to be silence when the male is in the car park so we can here the diagetic sounds which will give a better sense of the mise-en scene, and then while in the restuarant i think subtle background music is nessicery as this would be the norm in that sort of enviroment.

For the second advery i think the music needs to be more upbeat and faster temop while the women is int he kitchen to give the audience sense of urgency.

I've been looking on a few copywrite free websites and having a listen. I'll upload a few of my favourites in the next few days to see what you think

The Plan For This Week

As we have already chose our cast and decided on location, the plan for this week is to
-Finish our storyboard of shots for the first advert
-Start the storyboard for our second advert
-Write a script for the first advert
-Start filming/playing around with ideas for the first advert

Eve and I have discussed, and the plan was to start filming on Sunday as that is when the restaurant is closed and when our cast members are free. As you can see in our blog, the cast is Sadie Owen and Mitch Hall. We have had to replace Micth with Ash Munton as Mitch will not be free on the weekends and Ash is much more reliable.

Also, Eve and I have come to a decision and have agreed that I write the script and she can finish the storyboards. This way we are splitting the workload.
Music is part of our to do list but if we do not have time it'll have to move to the week after.

We also need to think about our radio advert. This can wait until the adverts are developing as it is not as important just yet.

Audience Lesson

In a recent lesson, we learn about target audience. We have considered this for our product and advertisments, however this is looking at it in greater detail.

There are different catogries in todays population (to do with income), These are not nessicerly always correct but usualy are about right:
CA -profesional, high earning people
CB -Middle managment, bank managers
CC -Jounier managment, shop manager
CC2-skilled manual people, carpenter
CD -semi skilled or un skilled, cleaner
CE -unemployed, students

For 'Doodle Noodles' we could narrow otu target audience into the social group CC2, CD, or CE. The reason being for this is the product we are promoting will be a reasonable cheap noodle snack which high earner may not choose eat, wheras lower budgeted people in societ as manual labourers, and students may choose because of costing and convience. Our product may appeal to people in each socail catergie, and we do not want to rule these people out.

We also learnt about the demographic and geographic profile of our audiance, this dicibes where your target market is likely to be from and what there life style may be like. for our product it is hard to pin point where our audience could be located.

We have took these things into concideration for when we film, in order to make sure we do reach out to the audience in which we aim to target.
